It's not long now until I'll be heading back to Bali. Since I got back from London at the beginning of July, I have been busy busy busy so this holiday could really not come soon enough. I'll once again be out there trying a couple of new hotels to share and (hopefully!) recommend to you.
In March, my parents and Canadian friends spent a night up in Candi Dasa and my mum came back absolutely in love with the area, despite their short stay. According to her, it's the new place to stay for affordable ocean-front accommodation- note I say "ocean" not "beach" . Candi Dasa is located on the East side of Bali, about a 2 hours drive North of Sanur. It's known as being a sleepy and quaint area to stay; a great place to escape the tourist riff raff that you find in the areas of Kuta, Legian, Seminyak and Sanur. It's starting to gain popularity for that very reason, its great selection of hotels that are affordable but stunning and its reputation for good restaurants. This is where mum and I will be heading for our first 2 nights of our trip in October.
This is the Candi Beach Resort and Spa. Yes, it does very closely resemble paradise so I'm sure you can understand my excitement.
It's located a little ways out of the main area in Candi Dasa but given so many of the restaurants offer pick up, the location hasn't concerned us at all. And with a view like that, I doubt we're going to find much to complain about! Except for the fact that we've only got 2 short nights here and the more we dream about being at this gorgeous hotel, the more we think it is just not long enough. But there's always next time...

I currently have 3 Bali trips to look forward to. Yes, 3. October I'll be having another mummy-daughter trip, splitting our staying between beautiful Candi Dasa (a new stop for me!) and our favourite Sanur. June next year, my family and I will be celebrating my dad's birthday in Bali, but we're still yet to do everything but book our flights. A few weeks ago, I dreamt of Bali. I dreamt that I was on beautiful Lembongan Island, at the funky Le Pirate Beach Club enjoying the stunning view and sunshine. I dreamt I was there alone. Now I'm not superstitious at all but when I woke up from that dream, it was decided; I was going to go back to Lembongan Island and I was going to go by myself. So that's exactly what I'm doing. I've booked myself 4 nights in November on the island with the help of The Lembongan Traveller. I decided to go against staying at Le Pirate, as much as I would love to because it's simply too isolated for a solo traveller but I cannot wait to get back there during my stay to enjoy the atmosphere one of the days I'm there. Saying I'm excited is an understatement. I seriously cannot wait to get back to the paradise island and I cannot wait to enjoy those 4 glorious nights all to myself.
In January, I snuck off to Bali for a quick getaway. With cheap flights a good deal on accomodation thanks to booking.com, I was able to make a 3 night stay, not only affordable, but wortwhile. Of course I am spoilt living in Perth and having Bali just 3.5 hours away so not everyone will be so lucky to escape for just 3 nights, but no matter where you live in Australia, it's not so hard to get the best deal. Here are some steps that I follow to get the best price on my holidays.
1. Do your research!
One of the first steps to planning a trip to Bali is figuring out which area best suits your need. Are you looking for a quiet and relaxing holiday, do you plan on being out and about and want shopping and great restaurants on your doorstep, do you want a nice swimming (or maybe surfing) beach, or maybe you're after a view of lush greenery? Or maybe you're staying long enough to be able to split your trip between a couple of different places. Bali has got something for everyone. Figure out what you're after and take that to friends that know Bali or to a Bali forum like this one on TripAdvisor. If you're asking for advice, listen to it! It's important to have all the information so you can make the right decisions and really enjoy your trip.
2. Finding cheap flights
Every airline has specials now and then so sign up to their email alerts or be prepared to check the prices each day. I find a tool like SkyScanner to be invaluable because it saves you from visiting each different website. Keep in mind that the cheapest flights will generally be at the worst times. If your budget is quite strict, be prepared to book a very early morning or late night flight. The cheapest days to fly are usually Tuesday's and Thursday's so take this into consideration when you're planning your dates. A great trick to getting even cheaper flights is to make use of Jetstar's Price Beat; if you take the price of another airlines flight (must be at a similar time), they will give you the flight for 10% cheaper. Conditions apply for this offer and you must book and pay when you call. Click here to go to their website and check out the conditions.
3. Finding cheap accommodation
Have a notebook ready for this step. I always head to a website like booking.com to see what kind of prices I can get for hotels. Write a list of hotel's that catch your eye and the price they're offering. You can often get free cancellation on booking.com, sometimes for a slightly higher price but your card won't get charged until you're actually at the hotel, so you can cancel it if something else comes up. While I'm doing this, I always head over to TripAdvisor to check out the reviews for the hotel's I'm interested in. If they've got bad reviews, they are off my list. It's worthwhile to check the prices available on the hotel's website. Sometimes it's cheaper to book direct due to early bird specials etc. Sometimes I'll stop here and book directly with the hotel if they offer a cheaper price or I will take the prices I find to Flight Centre, where they will give you an even cheaper price. Yes, they will only beat it by about $1 but if you need to book multiple rooms, this can add up. It can be reassuring to some people to know that someone else is going to do the hard work for them in the case that you need to find alternative accommodation.
I'm sure you've guessed it already, but yes, I'm heading back to Bali. I feel a bit silly after the fuss I made about last month's trip being my last one for who knows how long, but hey, a trip to Bali is a trip to Bali! Now I'll just have to repeat the process after this trip! My mum and I are in the process of planning our short 5 night getaway for October. We got cheap flights ($550 return for both of us!) and Mum bribed me by offering to pay for my airfares. I'm very lucky, you don't need to tell me. No accommodation is booked yet because we're still throwing a few ideas around and tossing up between hotels. Our dates align with family friends so I'm really looking forward to enjoying the trip with another mother-daughter duo. We plan to spend our first 2 nights in Candi Dasa where I've never stayed before so hotel and restaurant suggestions are very welcome. Let the planning begin again!!
My trip to Bali in March was the first time I stayed on the island of Lembongan, located off the East coast of Bali. I had visited for a day trip last year while on the Bali Hai Cruise (see here) and had gotten a bit of a feel for the island. After drooling over other traveller's photos, I decided to include it in my itinerary for three nights. Because I had never stayed there before and didn't know the area, there were a few things I had ask. If you're considering staying on Lembongan for the first time, I'm sure you'll be asking them too so I've put together this post to help as best I can:)
Nusa Lembongan is away from the hustle and bustle of Bali. The lack of traffic, with the exception of scooters and transport trucks, the fact that the island is made up of two local villages and is somewhat still undeveloped, it retains an "Old Bali" feel. If you're wanting to relax and enjoy some beautiful beaches, it might be the place for you. It's where some of Bali's best surf breaks can be found along with some great snorkelling and diving. It's got watersports, spa's, yoga, great restaurants and beautiful hotels and villa's.
The only way to get to Lembongan Island is by boat. If you're prone to sea sickness, don't worry too much - it's only half an hour away! There are a range of fast boat companies to choose from and the trip should cost about 450,000 Rupiah (about $45) per person for a return trip. Kids can travel at a discounted price. This includes pick-up at your hotel in Bali, transfer to and from your accommodation on the island and drop-off at a hotel or at the airport when you get back to Bali. I chose to travel with Rocky Fast Boats.
On the island, you can find accommodation to suit every budget. It has everything from cheap and cheerful, boutique hotels, luxury villa's and everything in between. You can get beachfront, street front, cliff front and with an amazing view. There are a few different locations to choose from, depending on whether you want to have everything on your doorstep or just a short walk away or maybe you'd like something a bit more out of the main area. I stayed at Lembongan Harmony Villa's. A map like this one from WikiTravel will be helpful in getting your bearings and choosing a place to stay if you haven't been to Lembongan before.
There are no taxi's on the island so getting around can be tricky. Walking is of course the most obvious option, and with the island only being about 4 kilometres from end to end, it's doable, but with Bali's mostly humid climate, it may not be preferable. The easiest way is to hire scooters. This will cost you about 70,000 Rupiah a day per scooter. You're not required to have a license for a scooter on the island, but keep in mind that unless you have your international license and the equivalent license from home, your insurance will probably not cover you if you have an accident. Getting scooters means you can explore the island at your leisure. The traffic lacks here but the roads are not in the best of shape. Push bikes are also available but be aware that there are quite a lot of hills. If you're not able to ride or scoot, golf buggies are available for hire on the island. At about $80 to over $100 a day, you'll need to factor this into your budget. A lot of restaurants offer free pick-up after 5:00.
If you're thinking of staying on Lembongan Island for the first time, resources like The Lembongan Traveller will be invaluable to you. You'll be able to get answers to every question you have as well as discounted rates for accommodation and restaurant recommendations.
I absolutely loved staying on Lembongan and really enjoyed its slower pace. It was quite overwhelming to return to the busy streets of Bali with its honking horns. I would definitely return and would probably stay longer. I would recommend staying on the island for at least 3 nights to give you plenty of time to relax, explore the island and its neighbours (Nusa Ceningan and Nusa Penida) and maybe go snorkelling. It's a beautiful place to visit with some nice spas, lovely restaurants and amazing accommodation options.
My last trip to Bali marked my tenth time to the beautiful island. Even though I've been there ten times, nine of them being just in the last 4 years, there is so much of the island I am yet to see and to experience, so much I haven't done there yet. I don't know when I'll be back in Bali, but I know it won't be too long. The island holds a special place in my heart and I know it'll be there waiting for me when I'm ready to come back, after I explore the rest of the world a bit more. I still have a lot to share with all of you; my recent visits to hotels and restaurants plus more of my tips for travelling to Bali. Where ever my travels take me next, I took forward to sharing those adventures with you too. But who knows, maybe I'll be back there sooner than I think.
Just one more sleep to go until I'll be on my way to Bali once again!! My 10:00am flight will have us landing at about 1:45pm (I love living in Perth!) and I've already organised with my beloved driver, Yuda, to pick us up. I think you know you've found a keeper (keeper of a driver that is) when you're as excited as I am to see them!! We'll be heading straight to our first hotel, the Rama Garden in Legian for our first 3 nights.
This time round, I'll have someone else joining me on my holiday. No, not my sister, but this little guy!!
He is the mascot of a Bali Facebook group I'm a part of who is making his way around Bali with its members. He is know as Pak (Mr.) Teman, which means friend or companion in Indonesian and it's my turn to babysit!! I won't be including his adventures on my blog but you can follow him on Instagram here. Or if you're interested in being part of the Facebook group, please send me a private message (via my blog Contact Me page or Facebook). We always welcome new members with open arms:)
That's right everyone, this coming Friday I will be jetting off yet again to my beloved Bali! This is not just another holiday, this one is a bit more special than that. Why? Well to start with, I'm going with my sister. That may sound like just any other trip but a week after my return, my sister will be making the move to the UK to work for possibly 2 years. We don't know when she'll be coming back and I don't know when I'll be going to visit her. Secondly, I'm once again staying at a couple of new hotels, trying to restaurants and for the first time, I'll be staying at Lembongan Island which I'm so excited about!! And lastly, after this trip to Bali, I have no idea when I'll be back. With my sister moving away, it's time for me to work a bit more, save a lot harder so I can afford to travel a bit further away from home and go visit my sister. One things for sure though: this is going to be an amazing trip and I will be back in Bali one day.
For the last leg of my trip, I'll be returning to the lovely Tamukami Hotel in Sanur. I stayed here last July with my mum and we absolutely loved it. It's a gorgeous boutique hotel with all the rooms overlooking the beautiful lagoon style pool. Nestled down a laneway off the main street, it is quiet but still in a fantastic location and fantastically run by an old Belgium couple. Maybe it's the fact that they live on the hotel grounds that has the staff on their toes and the hotel running so smoothly. I cannot wait to return to this gem.

That's right, in just under a month I'll be one my way back to Bali!! I have 11 nights all together; 7 with my sister, 1 alone and 3 with my parents. As usual, I just can't wait to get back, stay in new hotels, eat at new restaurants, explore new areas. Here and here are the first 2 places I'll be staying. I haven't yet revealed my last hotel choice so stay tuned!!
This is probably the part of my March holiday that I'm most excited about. Having had a taste of Lembongan Island in February last year when I visited the island with the Bali Hai day trip (see here) and seeing many photos of the island from fellow travellers, I decided it was a place I MUST stay. Since I didn't know much about the island, I was at a loss of where I should start. I seeked out the advice of Lembongan regulars who helped get a better idea of what kind of place I would like to stay in and what budget I was looking at. I found that what you paid for a nice place on Lembongan was significantly cheaper than what you'd pay in Bali.
I came across what I believe is heaven on Earth, by the name of Lembongan Harmony Villas. At the price of just $120 per night not including breakfast, I will be staying in a gorgeous (and private) 1 bedroom villa, with a patio area and a plunge pool with a killer view over the Playgrounds surf break and Bali in the distance.
When I was first planning this trip, I had my heart set on staying at these villa's so I completely rearranged the dates I'd be there so I could get a booking and I'm so glad I did. I've been keeping an eye on the reviews as I always do and they are consistently glowing. I am just SO excited.

Well let me start off with the good news: my sister has agreed to come to Bali with me in March! After all the fuss and the worry of who would come with me and whether or not I'd even end up going, it is now all taken care of! What a relief.
Our first 3 nights will be spent in Legian at a small hotel called Rama Garden. It's in a great location, with restaurants and shopping on its doorstep and not not far from the beach. What attracted me to this hotel was how small it is, with just 30 rooms and the rooms all being of the same standard as well as being recently renovated. The pool is the centre of the hotel, with all the rooms overlooking it with either a verandah and balcony. The reviews are consistently good (have a look at them on TripAdvisor) and the price is right, with me paying about $75 a night for a room including breakfast.
It looks so inviting and comfortable. Oh how I love staying at different hotels! I actually had the chance to go into the hotel during my recent trip. Although it has a sports bar at the front that some reviews have said gets a bit noisy, it is completely blocked off from the hotel part. The pool looked gorgeous; perfect size for the hotel and very well maintained. Now that I've seen it and what a great location it's in, I can't wait for my 3 nights there in March. Last week I received an e-mail from Virgin Australia informing me that my and my friends flight time from Bali had been changed from 6:00pm to 1:30pm the same day; 4.5 hours earlier. Our flight going to Bali had already been changed to 11 hours later than the original time taking away a day, so I was far from happy about this change that took away another day from our holiday.
After quickly discussing things with my friends, myself and one of the girls, Mikhala, decided to change our flight home to the following day to make up for this, while Courtney and Sami had to stick with the original plan and deal with the time change. This meant that I needed to find a place for Mikhala and I to stay for that extra night. So I was on a search for a cheap, friendly and comfortable hotel in a good location. After a bit of research and advice from fellow Bali goers, I settled on Poppies Cottages.
Poppies is a well known little hotel located in Kuta in Poppies Lane 1. Kuta is known for being very touristy, busy, noisy, smelly which it is but Poppies is known as an oasis and all this gets left behind when you walk through the gate. It's a great price of $85 per night plus tax and is in a great location with some fantastic restaurants on the doorstep and the beach just a 5 minute walk away. Mum and I enjoyed Poppies Restaurant in July (see here) which was great and had the same feel as what I hear Poppies Cottages has. I'm really looking forward to staying there, even if it's only for a night.

For the last leg of my girl's trip this coming November (see here and here for the first 2 parts), I had decided on 4 nights in Legian. This would give us a chance to do our shopping, enjoy some sunsets, visit Waterbom Park and get to the clubs if we felt like a night out. I wasn't very familiar with the Legian area when I was planning the trip so finding appropriate accommodation was a bit tricky. I was after a villa; 2 bedrooms with a private pool. There are a few horror stories of people staying in villa's that have been broken into so security was a must and I felt more at ease with the idea of being in a villa complex. This way, we'd have the security, staff on hand all the time and other guests to mingle with if we didn't want to be tucked away by our own private pool.
After a bit of research, I came across Villa Coco. It is situated down a lane way just off Jalan Double 6 in Legian which is an area I'm quite familiar with now thanks to my recent stay at The Pearl which is just a few minutes walk away. It ticked all my boxes; it had plenty within walking distance, including the beach, is a villa complex with a range of different accommodation choices such as 1 and 2 bedroom garden bungalows, studio rooms, 1 bedroom, 2 bedroom and a 4 bedroom pool villa as well as having a communal pool and mostly importantly, they're very reasonably priced. We are booked in for a 2 bedroom pool villa and the manager was quick to agree to putting in 2 extra beds so none of us have to share. The 2 bedroom villa's look fantastic with semi-outdoor bathrooms, good sized pools and a very comfortable lounge area. The reviews on Trip Advisor have been constantly positive.
While I was in Bali in July, I managed to have a sneak peak at a couple of the 2 bedroom pool villas and they look exactly like the photos on the website. I was very impressed with how great they looked. I'm so excited to stay here!!

After enjoying 3 nights in Sanur in November (see here), my friends and I will then be heading up to Ubud for the next 3 nights. This will be my first time staying in Ubud and choosing accommodation here was probably the hardest part of planning the trip. I've only been up to Ubud once on a day trip so I didn't know whether it'd be best to stay in the centre of town or a bit further out, I wasn't familiar with any of the hotels, the restaurants or even the streets. I only had a few must haves for where we would stay: comfortable rooms with twin beds, good location and a view. After a lot of research, I finally settled on the Beji Ubud Resort. I chose it based on the recommendations from a fellow Trip Advisor poster. It met all my requirements and was a reasonable price, but most importantly, it doesn't just have a view, it has the view. Set right on the edge of a valley in Ubud, The Beji Ubud Resort seems to have made the most of the view they have. The hotel is set over numerous levels and has 5 pools, 4 of which are infinity pools overlooking the valley.
The rooms all look fantastic and very comfortable. Only two twin rooms were available and I was lucky to book them. These rooms are Garden Rooms which are of the lowest standard in the hotel, but there does not seem to be any compromise on comfort and quality.
Although the hotel is located about a 20 minute walk or 5 minute drive out of central Ubud, I don't think it'll be an issue. The hotel has a shuttle bus running throughout the day and a lot of restaurants offer pick up and drop off. I am really looking forward to our stay here and am SO excited to see that amazing view with my own eyes.

In November, my friends and I will be spending our first 3 nights in Sanur. Our original plan was to stay at Kejora Villa's in a 3 bedroom pool villa. Our deposit was paid and I was very excited to be staying here until our flight was changed from 7:00am to a 6:00pm meaning we wouldn't be arriving until about 10:00pm. I wasn't happy as it meant we were missing out on a whole day of our holiday. I decided to seek accommodation elsewhere in Sanur because I didn't want myself or my friends paying $300 per night between us when we would barely be able to enjoy it. The manager at Kejora Villa's understood our predicament but unfortunately was only able to offer us a refund or we would have to keep the booking as is.
I got in touch with a well known Austalian Expat and Balinese business owner, Bloody Ron, who owns the Raven's Nest Villa and was very happy when he informed me that the villa was available for our required dates. I ran the idea past my friends and they responded with the typical "Whatever you think is best." So I got the refund from Kejora and paid for the Raven's Nest instead.
The Raven's Nest is a 3 bedroom (2 x double rooms, 1 x twin) villa with a private pool located in central Sanur at the street entrance of the Griya Santrian and Villa Shanti. This is the area of Sanur that I know best and feel most comfortable with as well as being the location of some of my favourite restaurants. I chose it for our accommodation because of its location, it's very reasonable price ($180 AUS per night) and what it offers for the price. Being a group of 4 girls, I wanted a place where we could have our privacy and not risk having rooms far apart from each as we might have in a hotel. We are not a rowdy group of girls at all but we certainly can get a bit silly together which could easily disturb others. For what we needed, a villa was the way to go. I'm definitely looking forward to staying at the Raven's Nest and having my first villa experience.

After complaining to my girlfriends and my mum about having nothing to do because my November trip to Bali is already booked and paid for, I finally have another trip to plan. Ok, it hasn't been that long since I haven't had anything to plan, but the planning part of a holiday is one of my favourite things! The agreeing on dates, checking daily for airfares, researching accommodation I love it!
Very recently, a girlfriend of mine agreed to come to Bali with my in March next year. When I say agreed, I mean a "Yes, I'd love to come!" Not a "ok, yeh I guess I could do that." Even better, she was happy to me to plan everything! So dates were agreed, a combination of Sanur, Legian and Nusa Lembongan was agreed and the rest was up to me. It's been about two weeks and, surprise surprise, I have planned it all already and booked two out of three of our (my) accommodation choices. I'm feeling very satisfied with myself, but I'm also dreading the next few months because I'm once again left with nothing to plan.
What I'm most excited for for this trip is to spend a few days at Nusa Lembongan. I've visited the island while I was doing a day trip with Bali Hai, but never stayed there. Although I was never alive to see "Old Bali", I imagine it was something like Lembongan with its lack of traffic, potholed roads, dirt tracks, cheap and authentic food. But I know that where we have chosen to stay is nothing like old Bali. After researching numerous hotels and villas, I have decided on Harmony Villa's. Harmony Villa's consists of two villas; a one bedroom and a two bedroom, both with incredible views. We have booked the one bedroom villa. I am so happy and SO EXCITED!! The villa is a very reasonable price of $120 per night (low season), although it doesn't include breakfast. But you cannot put a price on a view like this!

My parents have recently been planning a trip to Bali for March to meet up with one of Dad's old friends from Canada. Mum had lightly suggested that maybe I'd like to think about coming along. Of course I would use any excuse to go back to Bali yet again, but I didn't want to tag along with my parents all the time, so I hadn't planned on going. That was until one of my close girlfriends agreed to come along. Which means, yes, I get to plan another trip!!
I have to admit, I actually love the entire planning process of a holiday; checking flight prices everyday until you find the right one, researching numerous accommodation options, checking prices and dates. They do say that planning a holiday can be almost as enjoyable as the holiday itself.
It's only been a week since my friend agreed to come with me, along with agreeing to let me plan everything and this is what I've come up with so far: 9 nights in total, 4 in Sanur at the Tamukami where my parents and Dad's friend will be, 3 nights at Nusa Lembongan (I haven't stayed at Lembongan before, only had a day trip there in February 2013) and 2 nights in Legian to finish up. I have shortlisted accommodation for Lembongan and Legian so all that's left is checking that my accommodation choices are available, the right price and waiting for cheap airfares. Stay tuned!!!
I spent some time yesterday getting all my clothes ready for my trip. As Mum and I were originally planning this trip to be only 5 nights, we had opted to take only carry-on luggage. Keeping in mind that I'm only a 21 year old girl that has LOTS of clothes and LOTS of bathers and that I like to have choices of what I'm going to wear each day, this was going to be a feat in itself. But I have, for once, managed to pack smartly to be able to fit everything into my carry-on bag. I have limited myself to only 3 pairs of bathers (I usually take about 5), 2 pairs of shorts, 3 dresses, 5 tops, 3 pairs of shoes and 2 handbags. I am very proud. Luckily, we do have check-in luggage coming back because a girl needs to do her shopping and be able to bring it all home. Keep your fingers crossed that I'll be able to control my shopping as much as I controlled my packing.
